14th Anniversary, Did we make a difference?
From: Steve
Hey ;
Just wanted to take a minute and say thanks for providing an outlet & a venue for free speech. While I don’t agree with the use of profanity over the air due to the wide ages and gender of the listeners , I do believe in the right to discuss or voice the wide range of specific topics , opinions and ideas openly over the air.
The use of profanity & 4 letter words only tends to diminish the validity of the topic and credibility of the broadcaster who uses the language.
Aside from that thought, there are many listeners to your show AWW, who welcome and really appreciate you as a role model…speaking up and voicing your points on what the government is doing to the people.
Sure you once held some very different ideas…but like you said on the air, you’re still basically the same..but through education , you began to understand and see what’s happening to us at the hand of our illustrious leaders in Washington. and it isn’t right…
Mal’s a devout Dem. and it was proper to support and vote along part lines all through your life back in the day. My parents & grandparents I discovered were democrats…didn’t matter who it was. Me on the other hand refer to myself as a moderate conservative , but I look at the person, not the party. Like Clint Eastwood says…when an elected official ( and they do work for us) , doesn’t do the job they were hired to do , Ya gotta let em go.
I watched both the RNC and the DNC last week. I listened to what both had to say. Buit most of our democratic brothers and sisters were very biased about the reublicans, judging before hearing and blasting Clint Eastwoods performance. He’s a gifted actor, an independent, but like you, he became educated concerning the current administration and instead of a straight up speech , he presented his thoughts in a different hilarious but powerful way.
At any rate, we your listeners support and appreciate you and Jen’s open and honest viewpoint and we agree with you.
Finally WBCQ Has made a big difference. The interesting diversity of programming, the personality and for All of us who have discovered Radio but never had quite the resources to go out and start a station but are fascinated at the technical stories and education that you and the BCQ staff have provided.
Not to mention the rest of us who have actually worked at formatted stations
and just ooze with envy andsatisfaction when we tune in and hear you reflect and talk about all that goes on at a hand built operation like WBCQ. We relate.
It’s actually ( and you know this), an extended family to us. It’s a bond on a much more personal level than ever could be developed with a commercial am/fm station. WHY ? because with WBCQ, the personalities share with us all the daily aspects that go in in your lives and we connect via the phone & email.
How many people were saddend by Jay’s death…… and shed some tears when Alice passed away. WBCQ is a beacon to many out there who have no family left and tune in to hear the familiar voices of you, Jen, Larry, Tim , Mal & the rest.
That’s quite a difference you’ve made… You say a prayer at the end of the show, and for some, that may be the only prayer they hear or relate to each week.
Your view on how the fed govt is way too deep in our lives and wallets, helps to comefort many of us who like you, are also feeling the pinch…..and you and Jen help give them a little courage to fight back and endure and not give up.
There are those who would have you keep those comments off the air and off your show. Frankly, we were all very proud to hear you defend your right to speak out against the current leaders…..You said twice. I will Not Conform and I will not stop.
To hear you say that and stand up for what you and we believe… you just helped boost our confidence that we don’t have to roll over and play dead.
No offense to Mal, but we do want to hear you speak up and reinforce what’s right.
Thanks Allan….for the 4 shortwave beacons that cut through the darkness of the world with a little hope, faith and entertainment and friendship for all.
Happy Birthday WBCQ .
Steve

WBCQ propagation models updated for January, 2013
We’ve updated the shortwave propagation models for each of the four WBCQ shortwave services for January, 2013. The models are useful for prospective programmers and listeners alike.
For each of WBCQ’s four shortwave services, a propagation prediction chart was generated for typical hours of operation. All times listed are in coordinated universal time (UTC). Sunspot numbers were estimated using the predicted sunspot numbers for cycle 24 from the IPS web site.
Signal coverage is shown in a full color graphical display over a map of North America. The median field strength in dBu is shown. Higher numbers translate to a stronger signal. Just beacuse a particular region is not shown in the signal coverage map, it doesn’t necessarily mean that that service cannot be heard there. Shortwave signal propagation varies depending on solar conditions. A solar storm or geomagnetic disturbance can enhance or degrade shortwave signal coverage in a particular area.

Digital transmission experiment on WBCQ
On Friday, May 4, 2012, during Allan Weiner Worldwide (8pm US eastern time, 0000 UTC), we will be presenting an experiment in the transmission of text messages in digital formats. During the show, we will transmit a brief message in MFSK64 format. This message consist of text that listeners can save to a file with an .htm suffix, then open and view it in a web browser.
The message can be decoded using a variety of free software packages. One such package is FLDIGI, which can be found at http://www.w1hkj.com/
Thanks to Kim Andrew Elliott, audience researcher at the International Broadcasting Bureau, for coordinating this test.
